Sam Levinson just confirmed on April 7 that Fez remains alive in Euphoria Season 3, a decision the creator says honors late castmate Angus Cloud while shaping the show’s final arc. This choice—keeping a beloved character present off‑screen—lets writers preserve Cloud’s influence on the story without recasting or erasing him.

On the red carpet, Levinson told Variety, “There’s a lot of scenes where people are talking to him on the phone,” signaling Fez will have an audible, emotional presence even though Cloud is no longer with us. The show’s creator added, “I couldn’t keep him alive in real life but I could keep his character alive in the show,” explaining the decision as both tribute and practical storytelling.

Cloud, who broke out as Fezco O’Neill, died in July 2023 at age 25. Because his death preceded Season 3 production and Fez’s fate was left uncertain at the end of Season 2—after a shooting during a police altercation—many viewers assumed the series would write him out. Instead, Levinson says the new episodes give Fez a multi‑episode off‑screen arc and even teased “the last few episodes” will carry significant payoff for the character.

The Season 3 premiere arrives April 12 on HBO at 9 p.m. ET. Levinson has framed the new season around larger questions of meaning and belief after loss, telling The Hollywood Reporter that Angus’s passing forced him to rethink the show’s moral center and what story he wanted to tell next. He said Angus would have “cracked up” at his storyline—an attempt, Levinson suggests, to keep Cloud’s spirit in the series.

Fez’s continued presence is also part of a wider trend in prestige TV: when an actor dies mid‑run, writers increasingly preserve characters by shifting them off‑screen, using phone calls, texts or memory scenes to maintain emotional continuity while avoiding recasting. That approach honors the actor and gives the show a way to explore grief on its own terms—without theatrics.

The Euphoria cast has faced other recent losses as well. Eric Dane, who played Cal, died in February after a battle with ALS at age 53; Levinson said part of the long gap between seasons was spent finding a respectful way to acknowledge those departures in the storytelling. How will viewers react to Fez living on through others’ memories and conversations? Expect debate, tears, and plenty of social media tributes when the season unfolds.
