Plot: What We Know
Superman: Legacy focuses on a younger Clark Kent balancing his Kryptonian heritage with his human upbringing in Smallville. Gunn has emphasized this is an “origin story” but not in the traditional sense — Clark is already Superman, learning to be a symbol of hope while navigating a world that both fears and needs him.
The film introduces multiple DCU heroes (Hawkgirl, Mister Terrific, Metamorpho, Guy Gardner) suggesting a team-up element. Lex Luthor (Hoult) is positioned as a charismatic, intellectual rival rather than a cartoonish villain. The tone aims for optimism and wonder — “a love letter to Superman” per Gunn.
Gunn wrote the script before being named DC Studios co-CEO, and the film serves as the cornerstone of “Chapter One: Gods and Monsters” in the new DCU slate. Filming wrapped in July 2024; VFX and post-production are underway for the July 2025 release.
