Tron: Ares is the 2025 science-fiction sequel in the Tron series, following Tron: Legacy (2010). Walt Disney Pictures produced it. Joachim Rønning directed. It premiered in Los Angeles on October 6, 2025, and opened wide on October 10, 2025.
Plot
The story sends artificial intelligence from the Grid into the real world. The lead program is Ares, a highly advanced piece of software that crosses over. That is a shift from the earlier films, which mostly kept the action inside the digital world.
Cast
Jared Leto stars, with Greta Lee, Evan Peters, Jodie Turner-Smith, Hasan Minhaj, Arturo Castro, and Gillian Anderson. Jeff Bridges returns as Kevin Flynn. Nine Inch Nails composed the score.
The long road to release
Steven Lisberger, who created the franchise, started work on a Legacy sequel in October 2010. In March 2017 Disney moved toward a reboot with Leto as a new character. Garth Davis was set to direct in August 2020 and left in January 2023. Rønning took over the next month. Filming was delayed by the 2023 writers and actors strikes, then ran from January to May 2024 in Vancouver.
Reviews and box office
Critics were mixed. The film grossed $142 million worldwide against a production budget of $180–220 million and was treated as a box-office disappointment. It later found a commercial audience on home media.
