Project Hail Mary is the 2026 film version of Andy Weir’s 2021 novel. Phil Lord and Christopher Miller produced and directed it. Drew Goddard wrote the script. Amazon MGM Studios released it in the United States on March 20, 2026, after a London premiere on March 9. Sony Pictures Releasing International handled other territories.
Plot
Ryan Gosling plays Ryland Grace, a middle school teacher who wakes up on an interstellar spacecraft with no memory of how he got there. Gosling also produced the film. Sandra Hüller, James Ortiz, and Lionel Boyce play supporting roles.
How it was made
Pre-production started in 2020, before Weir’s novel was published. Filming ran through 2024 in the United Kingdom, on location and on sets. Every scene aboard the ship Hail Mary was shot on a practical set built for the movie.
Reviews and box office
Reviews were positive, with praise for Lord and Miller’s direction, Gosling’s performance, the character Rocky, and the film’s humor, themes, and visuals. It grossed over $685 million worldwide.
